It’s no secret that I am a gadget collector.  I have to confess that my IPod Touch is my absolute favorite, from my own pile of gadgets.  Of course, I like my phillips mobile media player too, with it’s voice recorder too.  It helps me to remember how to pronounce new kanienkeha and german phrases that I am learning for my travels.

I’ve posted about Gobby here in the past.  I wanted to comment on it again though, as many of my recent new friends have asked how they can learn how to code from their own house while I teach them from my house. 

Gobby is a collaborative text editor.  That means you can be at your office, start the gobby application and see exactly what I am typing at my computer at my own house.  I typically use a headset, so we can talk at the same time, while we code together.  You can copy / paste or type at my computer in real time too.  It’s an excellant way to learn how to create custom coding for your own website, when you are not able to meet with me in person.  (snow storms have a habit of making it difficult for my north country entrepreneur friends to get out)

As of November 2008, I am working full-time for my own company now.  My company is named ‘Seaway Websites’ and my husband is my business partner.  We are operating from the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory.

I’ve been having fun developing a website for my local radio station.  CKON FM 97.3 is as unique as our small community of Akwesasne.  When I travelled for my career in the past, I appreciated their website so much as I could listen in to their broadcasts and know what was going on back home.

Now, I am really excited to get the chance to integrate ckon fm ’s unique views of our world into a modern website that harnesses the power of innovative technologies.  Here are some of my thoughts and notes regarding this website project.

CKONFM.com’s old website was developed and maintained by their radio announcers, finance department, and various local webmasters in past years.  As a web developer coming from experience working with software engineers and multi-media publishing corps, I immediately noticed that they can benefit tremendously from a standard open-source content management solution.  

After a few brief discussions with various staff of the radio station, I suggested Joomla CMS because it is currently able to support their ‘future wish list’ of website features.  I did not tell them that their future wish list is currently possible to attain, within their budget.  I decided to just install it all, test it to verify it works correctly, customize it,  and surprise them within a few weeks. 

I also suggested that I provide one on one training for their current website admin, so she can find her way around a CMS that is brand-new to them.  The technical training and support phase of this project will begin immediately after the development, design, and new webhosting all goes live.

Part of the radio station’s vision for the functionality of their  website,  is to provide their audience with resources, tools, and info that is easy - fast - stable to access, view, and share from any computer device, mobile device with any internet speed (fast or slow).  They also want all those same benefits for their own sponsors and their own staff who is responsible for updating, managing, and promoting their website.  They also want the visual aspects of their website to be unique, professional, fun, and reflect the beautiful Akwesasne community.  I call these features standard Usability and Internationalization requirements that are absolute necessity for any website that I develop. 

I installed Joomla CMS with every plugin, module, and template that is available to support and provide social networking, search engine optimization, social media optimization, statistics and analysis, forms, user profiles and management, and so much more.  

I also integrated their old content into the new site and added tagging, linking, alt text, and everything I could think of to help them with SEO and SMO functions.  The statistics, graphing, and traffic analysis back-end features will help them to watch, monitor, and quickly make informed decisions in the future regarding their choices for effective and non-effective marketing.   Their own sponsors will also be able to receive detailed analysis, graphs, and more so they can view the effectiveness and value of working with ckon fm radio station.

I also took their original graphic logo and seperated all the elements into layers and seperate graphics.  Then I optimized each one for the web so it will load faster on the internet.  I am currently creating new website graphics and visuals with these optimized graphics.  I always do the graphics / visuals as the last phase of my development.  I create the visuals to support the functions of a website.

Some of the features that I integrated for ckon fm’s website:

• Viewers have the power to easily and quickly click a FONT RESIZER.  Great for the elders.  Great for the young folks who want small text to fit more content on their screens.
• Click to Listen.  Viewers can choose to have the text read out loud for them.
• Social Network.  Viewers, Sponsors, and CKONFM staff can sign up for free to add their profile, manage it with their own profile image, bio info, business info, website link, and more.  Viewers can then view their profiles, contact each other with online form, view who is friends with each other, and all the features that we have all become accustomed too with social networking.
• SMS / Text Messages.  Viewers can subscribe for free to be alerted when their school or business closes because of weather problems or power outages.  Each message will end with one short sentence blurb about the sponsor who made the alert possible.

How does websiteoutlook determine a website’s value?

Websiteoutlook contains a collection of actual number of pageview from other websites. The visitor data is combined with information about number of links that point towards the site, country, Alexa ranking and other data that is available on-line. All this information has been used to make a formula that uses the information that is available on-line to estimate the number of pageviews, its worth and possible daily incom that the site has.

Ping.fm is a simple service that makes updating your social networks a snap. For those of you that are interesting in deploying successful Internet Marketing plans, you will want to get yourself a Ping.fm account. You will need to enter the secret code ‘ vivalaping ‘ to signup for your free account.

I signed up today, and within 15 minutes I was able to add most of my social networks, then sent a post to all my networks with one click from Ping.fm. Dang, that is so much easier than posting individually to all the social networks.

jQuery JavaScript Library promises to be concise, fast, and simplify the way we traverse HTML, handle events, perform animations, and add Ajax interactions to our websites. jQuery is about 14kb (compressed), it supports CSS 1 to 3, basic XPath, and it’s Cross-Browser compatible.

I created a list of UI demos with jQuery that is a direct inspiration from the talented wall of webdesign. The jQuery website offers a ton of documentation, tutorials, plugins, and download options.
